I am after advice please. Can anyone tell me where the best place is to look up scottish births, marriages, etc.? Did civil registration start in 1837 the same as ours (I'm assuming it did) and does this work in the same way with ordering certificates?

Thanks
Michelle

Scotlands People is good. Here is the link:

There is a small charge for the info.

Good luck,

Hi Michelle

The best place online for BMD's is Scotlandspeople. It is £6 for 30 units and if you are careful you can get 4-5 certificates for that amount of units. Registration started in 1855 and before that you can look at the Old Parish Records which are on the same site. I don't think you can see the death indexes before 1855 on the site as far as I know. You can download the certificates to your computer and print them off. It is a lot easier than the English system.

You can get double the units for the same price if you buy them through the local library- but that might be only Scottish libraries

Hope this helps

familysearch have a lot of Scottish bmds. Some seem to be transcriptions of the civil registers after 1855. Searching on there first can help save credits on Scotlandspeople.
