hi all,

i have a couple of relatives from different sides of my tree who fought in the first world war and shortly afterwards. i will put up all the details so excuse me if its a bit long winded.

the first is Sydney Gannaway born Hackney in 1891. i have his pensions records. adress on enlistment in 1915 is 39 white cross street, Brighton. he was discharged after a bout of TB. from what i can gather he came home to Bournemouth (where his father lived) after contracting TB, and was discharged from the army later that year. on his record it says he was in 9th battalion of Royal Sussex regiment, which i have googled and found they were involved at the battle of Delville wood in 1916 but i would like to know more about his service or greater detail about the regiment and the men he fought with, does anyone know where i miught get this kind of information or if it is even possible to find out this stuff please?

The other id Frederick James Fagan born 8th April 1900. i know he served in Belgaum (sp) as i have pictures of him there, but i do not know when he joined the army or where. as he would only have been 18 in april 1918, i think he didn't serve in the front in ww1 as i can't find any records for him either but i think he may have joined up then and beleive he may have served until around 1926 when he married and i have record of him working elsewhere. are there any records available for persons in the army at this time please?

i have all census returns for these men and bmd's too, it is just their army careers i would like to find out a bit more about.

Thank you so much for reading as i know it is rather long but any help or directions of where to look would be really appreciated.

Leanne.

Thank you Jonesy i will take a look. also it is only really through rumour that i know why he was bought home. his daughter just knew that when he caught tb in the 20's he had it before. i beleive he also met his wife in bournemouth and i know that his brother and father lived there until atleast jan 1918 as that is on his records as where to send his medals to. will there be any medical/hospital recorda available at all?

Thank you very much for the websites, off to take a look now. :)
Leanne.

On Medal roll Index he receives the Victory & British Medals and shows his date of discharge 20/12/1917 (home for Christmas)
Name: Sydney Gannaway
Regiment or Corps: R Suss R 7 (HS)
Regimental number: G/8930

It looks as though Service Records were destroyed along with many others in WW2.

thank you Alan,

sorry i should have said where fred was born. he was born 8th April 1900 in guildford, Surrey. i am afraid i dont know where he was living at the time. in 1911 he was in Horley Surrey, he also went to school in chipstead.

thank you for looking for me. i have seen his pensions record which says he came home in feb and discharged in dec. during that time his brother was also bought home and wounded so i am pleased he was back at the time to comfort his father and sisters.

thank you again Alan,
very kind of you to look for me.
Lee.

wondered if anybody else had any other tips or pointers for finding these men?

for Sydney i am looking for more detail about his regiment (which i have founda little of on the websites jonesy advised) and if there might be any more in depth info about him personally?

I have just gone through all the f and j fagan service records but none look to be him, has anyone got any ideas for if he joined after the end of ww1 please?

Thank you for those who have already given pointers.
Leanne.
