Thank you Mary and Ozibird for trying to help. Unfortunately I don't know for sure whether Thomas Edwards was born in Bodmin, Cornwall or Plymouth, Devon and I also don't have any idea of his parents' names. I know he was living in Lambeth in 1867 and his wife's name was Emma Hawkins bnorn c1845 in Chatham, Kent. He was in West Ham in 1871 and Plaistow from 1881 to 1901. Childrens names Frederick, Daniel, Elizabeth,George, Emma, Mary Ann and Charles. I am new to this and wading my way through the mire? I guess your 1851 match could be right. Hope this other information may help a bit more.
Very grateful. Barbara

Can you tell me what "Fundholder" as an occupation means please?

Ozibird

Ozibird Report 3 Mar 2009 21:36

It means he was an independent man of means - stocks & shares.

Though there is this as well - "fundholder", this usually means living off a modest but survivable amount of capital/income often derived from a will.

I've not known that it was often derived from a will.

Ozi.

Doesn't sound like your man, does it?

Barbara

Barbara Report 3 Mar 2009 21:47

Thanks. Thomas was in fact a Merchant Seaman and then later a Stevadore/Dock Labourer. But who knows, perhaps he had been left some money in a Will and was clever enough to invest it in stocks and shares! Barbara

you need to get his marriage cert this should provide you with his fathers name and occupation

Barbara Report 4 Mar 2009 12:26

I have been looking for their Marriage Certificate for some time but without any luck. Have been looking between 1864 - 1866 as their first son was born about 1867 - not that this means anything!

Thanks for your help anyhow.
