Can anyone tell me whether it's possible to view workhouse inmate records on line. I am particularly interested in the Caistor Workhouse, Lincolnshire.

Thanks

Fred

There is quite a lot of info about Caistor and list of inmates in 1881

Hi Rutland Belle

Yes, I've found the info on the workhouse after googling. I really need information about inmates from 1843 to 1850 (between censuses). There are two children born there and I need to know whether there were Bastardy Orders and whether the mother's parents were named anywhere.

I just hoped there may be something on line to avoid a trip to Lincolnshire.

Thanks

Try contacting Lincolnshire County Council, they might have records, and might perform a quick search for free, or a small fee.

Hampshire did this for me, sadly no luck.

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/

It's pretty comprehensive and gives a list of what information is available for what periods for each location.

Click "Workhouse Locations" on the left and work your way through.

Caistor has a lot of info and pictures. But there are probably scant records of residents.

Records
Lincolnshire Archives [link], St. Rumbold Street, Lincoln LN2 5AB.
Limited holdings include Guardians' minute books (1836-1931 with gaps); Register of Bastardy orders (1881-1906).

edit - oops. That's just an alternate URL for the one already given in the thread. ;)

Hi Margaret and EvieBeavie

I'll give the Council a ring and see whether they'll do a search for me. Many thanks for your advice.

Hi Fred, did you have any luck with this? My G G Grandmother was in Caistor Workhouse as a child, so I'm very interested in what records are available.
