Hi can anyone help please?
I have a marriage cert for James Blackburn dated 1853. On it his Father is Isaac Blackburn. I can find James on the 1861 census in Liverpool which is where he was born but I can't find Isaac. Also I can't find either of them on any earlier census. Am I missing something?

When was James born and what was his and Isaac's occupation?

It is possible that Isaac was deceased by the time that James married, even if the cert doesn't say that.

Could James have been illegitimate? Sometimes illegitimate children "made up" a father's name when marrying to avoid embarrassment with the in-laws.

Does it give an occupation for Isaac or whether or not he is deceased? Often a "made up" father is described as deceased.

Thanks Richard. This could well be James. He was living in West Derby at the time of his marriage.
