thank you very much lotsof, that's really interesting and certainly sounds similar.

I've looked up 'infarction' for you and it says 'death of part of a tissue or organ because its blood supply has been cut off'. hope this can help you understand what happened with your daughter.

thanks ever so much for your help.

Hi Maz
I had a baby full term only 4lb 6 ozs and no obvious medical problems during the pregnancy (only 15 years ago) and I think the placenta was described as 'infarcted'? - (I think that probably means not working properly - it was never explained to me). She was a very poor little thing but fortunately had all the help from SCBU etc which would not have been available in the 1920s. The photo of her in the incubator still brings tears to my eyes and if she had been born in that era I don't think the outcome would have been good even if the best medical care at that time had been available. Thankfully she has grown up to be a lovely lassie and is now bigger than her mum.
Hope this will be of some help.

I would hazard a guess at a baby that was born to term but low birthweight due to an under developed placenta. There is a medical term for this (which I can't remeber) and it is rare nowadays because of scans, and monitoring etc

I was just thinking, perhaps the baby was premature too? Even now I think early babies can have trouble with feeding - if they were born a bit early (say three or four weeks) and weren't very heavy, perhaps they couldn't feed properly either?

It might be that malnutrition was the best word the doctor could come up with.

Hi Joan and Gwyn - how clever of you both!!! it DOES say 'no pm' !! the doctor must have been very sure of his diagnosis and that the circumstances were not suspicious. I wonder if the baby was early and didn't feed, or was sick a lot and the doctor had been in constant attendance over the 2 days. The family were not poor and would have been able to afford the best medical care.

Thank you so much girls :-) I will go and tell my sister all this now that I feel I understand it better.

Hi Joan, thanks, that confirms what I found. I am just a little puzzled that this could happen in 2 days from birth?

Hi guys, have just had a death cert. Baby died at 2 days of

"Cachexia
No Pill
Certified by
J Delia MD"
(I think it says No Pill anyway)

Baby died at home, presume he was born at home too as other babies in the family were. This was in 1922.

Have looked up Cachexia and know it means malnutrition or wasting. Can't understand how this could happen at 2 days though. Also what could 'No Pill" mean?

If anyone has any clues please let me know. This is quite a close relative so I am finding it a little disturbing.

Thanks.
