Hi all

I've got all sorts of anomolies. Irish born Manchester, Crewe Cheshire born Earlestown Lancashire, etc. etc. They are definitely the right people, much depends on who filled in the form or met the enumerator in the morning.

It wasn't really political - the Irish faced real discrimination.
Of course this was quite justified as they depressed wage levels by working for starvation wages, and generally lowered the tone of the place by wandering around looking malnourished.

Hi Jonesey,

Are you sure he didn't mean Sunbury?

Kind regards
Amanda

Thanks Jonesey - I think you are right and probably not a political decision, just that either the censor made a decision or that she was confused as to her birthplace. Has certainly given me something to think about.

Hi

On 1871 census, Margaret Watkins lists that she was born in Ireland and then on the 1881 census, her birthplace is listed as Marylebone. I think Margaret was probably of Irish descent as her mother, Mary MacDonald, was a visitor in the 1891 census and was born in Dublin. However I wonder if anyone could think of a reason why the birthplace changed. Would this be for political reasons - or maybe it was an assumption made by the census collector as I think Margaret couldn't write as her mark is on her daughter's birth certificate.

Just thought I'd throw it out there in case anyone had an idea.

Thanks
Alli
