Hi Pat

I haven't got as far as checking out the relationship between James & William Hamilton.

I think I'm going to try a new tack. When I go to the library, the OPR registers start with the oldest date, working forwards. I've been starting at the "beginning" and working towards today. I've decided a better way of working would be to roll the fiche to the end and start with the latest information, working backwards in time. That way, I won't do lots of research and then find that my tree goes in a completely different direction.

I'm going to check out the information I've already got and then take it back from there. I'll keep you posted on whether I really am descended from the Hamiltons. This could take some time!!!

Cheers

Diana

Are James Hamilton & William Hamilton related then?

At least you have sorted it out now, hope you haven't spent a lot of time researching the wrong parents.

Thanks for that, Margaret. I'll certainly keep them in mind as cousins.

Cheers

Disappointing, but good to find it out now rather than later.

Margaret

PS they could be cousins.

Janet Hamilton (wife of John Grant of Carriden, Bo'ness). I was in the library and came across the brother of Janet Hamilton in the OPR for Bo'ness:

"Hamilton: James Hamilton son to James Hamilton & Grisel Muir born April 7 and bap. 21st 1717". I noticed he was born seven and a half months after Janet Hamilton, which, given a month for conception, would make him two and a half months premature, at least. He had children so he must have survived to adulthood. THIS MADE ME DOUBT THAT JANET HAMILTON'S PARENTS WERE JAMES HAMILTON & GRIZEL MUIR. I went back to the library today and checked out Janet Hamilton's birth on 24 August 1716:

"Hamilton: Jonet Hamilton daugh. to Wm. Hamilton & Jean Tulloch born Aug. 24th & bap. Sber. 2nd. 1716".

This means James Hamilton & Grizel Muir are not my ancestors after all!

Cheers to all the folks I thought were related to me!!
