Most of my ancestors seem to appear on the census with lodgers. As they are mainly ag labs themselves I'm assuming they wouldn't have owned their accommodation so how would this work? Would they sublet? And who are they likely to rent from? i have no knowledge of these things at all and would love to know more about how they actually lived.

A lot of people took in paying lodgers. They lived with the family and paid a weekly sum for their keep.
My parents had lodgers right up the the 1970,s to help supplement the family income as we were a big family but one extra didnt make much difference to the family food bill or the extra washing etc.But the weekly payment they made was a big help in the family bills .
We always had single male lodgers who worked at local factories and needed accommodation but didnt want to live on their own and preferred a family environment.
I remember in the 1950/60,s several of them were from Southern Ireland and had come over for work

Hi

It is worth considering that some people were recorded as Lodgers on the census returns, but were actually family members. I have had this a few times with married daughters and Mother in Laws.

So family members could be lodgers? That makes me look at some census returns in a new light - didn't think of that. Thanks.
