Could this be Phoebe's first marriage
Phoebe Lee married at Aston 1857 - that would make her about 18 at the time of that marriage. Irene
ps found this marriage on IGI and she married James Thacker 28.04.1857 so looks like the wrong one - sorry.

It's your money, so you must make your own decision...............

Do these people say what records they access to do this 'error-checking'?

As far as I am aware, only the GRO and register offices hold original documents, so how do these people propose to access them?

Ricochet (and Joy)

From their homepage:

'If you do not have every detail for your certificate, please do not worry, because if we do not find an entry based on the information you give us, we will give you a complete refund.

If there is any doubt, or a choice of entries, we will consult you, and will not act until we hear your decision. If you decide not to proceed, we will give you a complete refund.'

My point being that this may be cheaper in the end that taking multiple stabs in the comparative dark with the GRO? I''ve already tried unsuccessfully once with error checking on 1 reference.

Using anything other than the GRO or register office is definitely to be avoided.

And.........don't forget that registraion wasn't compulsory until 1875, so you may just have to accept that the births you refer to which pre-date that year were simply not registered.

What error checking can bmd certs .co.uk actually do?

They are unlikely to purchase every cert to find out the details, and you can't see the details without so doing..............

Thanks for replies and suggestions...

Christine, yes- the 'granny' in 1881 is *presumably* the mother-in-law, i.e. Phoebe's mother, so would suggest MMN= Phoebe LEE, but can not find a marriage for that. Like you I found the marriage with JONES + HERRING, especially since 1911 suggests a marriage date of about 1865. But the marriage certificate won't make the connection to the children without one of their birth certificates? Daughter Phoebe isn't that easy to pin down. Only estimate of DOB is from 1881 before she disappears off the radar. Not with family in 1891 and hence hard to trace with such a common name. So Phoebe JONES C. 1871 (presumably after 4/1871 as not in 1871 census) Yardley on FreeBMD using:

Type: Births Surname: Jones First name(s): Phoebe
Start date: Jun 1871 End date: Dec 1872
Counties: Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire

Finds at least 6 possibilities, which I guess is better than 100s for brother John ;)

By the way, I have to search the 3 counties because of the proximity of the boundaries in the W.Birmingham and the black country area and because father Joseph was a canal boatman, so moved around a little.

The other siblings are just as problematic. Best I've got is youngest Thomas, who appears with family in 1891 and 1901 and who was in the war and hence I have a DOB of Feb 1889, but that just narrows him down down to less than 100!

Any other thoughts greatly appreciated.

The GRO and register offices do checking. Please don't order from anywhere else.

No idea if the local register office will be able to help, but I sent an e mail to one of the Welsh offices asking if they could confirm that the ( named) female child registered in a particular quarter of 1910 had a mother named ( gave name).
I had an e mail back today confirming this and giving details of how I could order.
I hope to receive the cert this week.

This was for JENKINS in Wales, so there was need to narrow my search.

Don't know anything about using that service but as this is the family in 1881, could you get one of the other children's certs, maybe Phoebe as there won't be as many to choose from. Presume you want it for mmn.

Has anyone used bmd-certificatesDOTcoDOTuk? Recommend them? Or other commercial services who do error checking....

I've been doing genealogy long enough to know my way around a little and have successfully ordered over 40 certificates direct from the GRO with and without error checking. But a few relies have got me beaten....

John (Joseph?) JONES c. 1869 West Bromwich?

Not 100% confident about middle name, date or exact place of birth. Hence have to search FreeBMD births thus:

Type: Births Surname: jones First name(s): john
Start date: Mar 1866 End date: Dec 1870 District: all
Counties: Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire

And then go lie down and have a drink when I see the results!
(Don't even think about using phonetic search on surname ;)

I know his fathers name (Joseph JONES) and mother's firstname (Phoebe), but -as far as I understand- the GRO will only do limited error checking on a limted number of possible index references (i.e. people)?

Hence I was looking at BMD-certificates as they say for 25 quid they will do all the error checking?

I'd appreciate anyones advise on this one?

Thanks

Barry
