Thank you for this. I didn't know you could search in that way. To be honest, I had put off following up at the Family History Centre because I wasn't too sure what to do. Leaving the safety of my little cocooned space in front of the computer!

Thank you. That was what I wasn't sure about - I thought perhaps the IGI record carried the only information there was and the film wouldn't show any more. I am not sure that the marriage was in Stert - I think it may have been Southbroom (also Devizes), which is why I thought he may have just lived in Stert. Presumably the film would tell me that too?

May not pick up any more answers tonight - him indoors thinks I've gone to bed already! Much appreciated anyway.

From the blue bar at top of IGI search screen, you can do a film # search in the library catalog

Film or fiche number
170779
Film/fiche search results
Endowments for the dead, 1923-1970; heir indexes, 1923-1949; baptisms for the dead, 1944-1970 Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Alberta Temple

Film or fiche number
184632
Film/fiche search results
Sealings for the dead, couples Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Salt Lake Temple

So both these films are internally submitted records.

Re:"I haven't been able to go and look at the films - would they tell me any more?"

By this date most parishes were using forms (and even those that weren't seem to be modelled on the forms, so a marr record would read:

"John Smith" OF "the" PARISH "of Auckland St Andrew"
AND "Jane Doe" OF "this" PARISH
WERE MARRIED IN THIS "Church" BY "banns" WITH THE CONSENT OF
" " THIS "seventeenth" DAY OF
"March" IN THE YEAR ONE THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED AND "fifteen"
BY ME "Wm Green Curate (signature)"
THIS MARRIAGE WAS SOLEMNIZED BETWEEN US "John Smith (signature)" "Jane Doe (signature)"
IN THE PRESENCE OF "George Smith (signature)" "Mary Doe (signature)"
NO "99"

Checking in Lewis, we see Stert is a parish:
STERT (St. James), a parish, in the union of Devizes, hundred of Swanborough, Devizes and N. divisions of the county of Wilts, 2½ miles (S. E.) from Devizes; containing 181 inhabitants. It is situated near the road from Salisbury to Devizes. The living is annexed to the vicarage of Urchfont.

So I guess the film might say he was from the parish of Stert, and give witnesses (who may be professional witnesses, but could well be family members).

Dinah is on the 1841 census, but she has remarried Thomas Ewell Lott, and they are in Northgate St Devizes. John Cole died in 1835 (I have a copy of his will) so nothing there to point me to his place of birth!

Hi Richard

Yes she is the right Dinah (although that opens up another can of worms - there were 2 Thomas's and 2 Betty's, either of whom could have been her parents!) - I am fairly confident about her, its just pinning down which John Coles is the right one.

I am not saying that the submitted entries are wrong, that john was born in stert but where did they get the info from.
The extracted records are taken from parish records.

Found this for dinah if her name as been mistranscribed, which could fit with her marrying in southbroom.
If you don,t know i believe southbroom is a area in devizes.

Hi Richard

There are 2 entries coming up - one says Stert and the other says Start(Stert is a village very near Devizes), one says Dinah Neat the other says Dinah Neate, one has Film no 170779 and the other says Film no 184632.

I have seen the the one saying Dinah Neale at some point and assumed it was a mistranscription. I am fairly certain she was Dinah Neate. I haven't been able to go and look at the films - would they tell me any more?

I have been using Olde Crone's wonderful instructions on using IGI properly, and have her to thank for quite a few ancestors. However, am I right in thinking that it can only work where the people in question stayed in one place?

My problem is as follows:
I have found my ancestor, John Cole on IGI, but the information has obviously come from the record of his marriage. I know that he later lived in Devizes Wiltshire and the IGI birth entry is "of Stert/Start around 1789 - marriage to Dinah Neate 8th May 1815".

I bought the CD with the Parish records for Stert on it, but there are no Coles. I am assuming this means that he was only resident in Stert and came from somewhere else. I have found several possibilities in nearby Chippenham, but how do I make the link between one of those and the Stert record? In theory, he could have come from anywhere. Is this a brick wall I won't ever be able to knock down or is there some other way of finding out?
