If you have £15 worth of Tesco vouchers they are doing the 2010 Platinum Family Tree Maker with 6 months free essential sub to Ancestry. A real bargain.

As a beginner to all this -I use ancestry and genes reunited. Ancestry gives you access to records but genes gives you access to 'people'.
Genes is a little more personal and provides 'comfort for the lost' -yes I've been there.
These two sites work well side by side.

I bought Family Tree Maker 2009 (Platinum) which comes with 6 months free sub to Ancestry. I bought it new from Amazon at about £35 - half the price you pay in the shops. If you haven't got a a stand-alone system this is a good buy.

i upgraded to worldwide a month ago
i have used it so much i think its already paid for itself,,so to speak,
nothing like looking yourself, and no more asking for lookups.
and you can do the odd lookup for others too.

I'd say Ancestry as FMP doesn't have the complete census records and you have to pay extra for the 1911 in any case.

If money is an issue, remember many UK libraries have a subscription to ancestry and somethimes FMP as well. It is free to access the material there!

Totally agree with everyone else, none better than Ancestry. If anyone has the worldwide membership could they please tell me if it is worth upgrading. I am at the stage now where I find a lot of my ancestors emigrated to US and Australia and have now come to a dead end. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks

Definitely Ancestry, just a wonderful site.

When I first started I was paying out for CD 's for census, and this cost me plenty of money,

I have purchased credits from Find My Past, but just for the 1911 census.

A few weeks ago there was an offer on where you could have had a year for £38 :( Anyway, go to ancestry.co.uk and take out the 14 day trial - its 24/7 and you can do an awful lot in that time. Dont just look at the census and bmd though, theres much much more on there.

You can get a 14 day free trial with Ancestry, so you can try before you buy. You can also pay monthly if you can't afford it all in one go, although this works out slightly more expensive.

Definitely not The Genealogist otherwise it's a close call between the big A and FMP.
