hi June

yep, thats definately them in 1901, even though the ages are out by 10 years. I have a feeling that Joseph wasn't quite sure when or where he was born as he seems to always put the same time and place as his wife.
I wonder if he was an orphan?

thank you everyone for your replies.

I'm positive i have the right marriage certificate as Joseph's occupation is the same as on his sons birth certificate 'firewood dealer'.

If Alfred was Joseph's son from a previous marriage, how come Joseph is down as a bachelor on his marriage certificate? Its Jane who was definately married before. She is 'widow' but could she have been waiting for her 1st husband to die before she could wed Joseph? If thats the case, then where is William Robert Reynolds?

aaargh, so frustrating!

thank you anyway for your ideas

Good point Potty - but if he is Jane's son then he would not have been Alfred Chapman in 1871 he would have shown under one of Jane's previous names.

Could be worth looking for him just by first name and year and place of birth - Jane as mother. That might help.

I tend to think that Alfred was Jane's son. He is listed after all the other children on the image - the usual way was male children first in age order then the females.

The only Alfred Chapman I can find in 1871 has a mother Margaret, a widow. Ancestry has mixed them up with the family above and gives his parents as John and Caroline.

What a muddle!

Are you really sure that the marriage cert is the right one? All these different surnames ...

It's possible that her mother - was married to John Abrams and then widowed and then married a Mr Tibbett/Tippett and then Jane took his name on.

I would be tempted to send of for the Tibbett/Reynolds marriage cert - but maybe check the 1871 to see if you can find her under all of her surname possibilities first ...

Alfred Chapman is more likely to be Joseph's son from an earlier marriage. If you can find that marriage then you need to find the death of his first spouse ... that may be why the marriage of Joseph and Jane is not where you are expecting to find it.

The nephew could be a good clue but until you can find out whether he is the nephew of Joseph or Jane he may not be any help at all.

Good luck

Hi all,
I've started researching my mother-in-laws tree and can't get further than 1881.
I found her great grandfather Joseph Chapman, a fire wood dealer living with his wife jane in 1881/1891/1901 and 1911 census. They are shown to be born the same year, 1851 and same place, Bethnal Green/shoreditch area.
On their son's birth certificate (Frederick John Chapman b.1888) Jane's maiden name is 'late Reynolds formerly Tippett'.
From this info i managed to find Joseph and jane's marriage certificate, but they didnt get married until 1890 although they were living as man and wife with children since 1881! The certificate says that she was a widow and her father was John ABRAMS (not tippett) who was a chimney sweep. Josephs father is unknown.
I'm now stuck where to look and can't find either Jane or Joseph in previous census' .
I found a marriage in Bethnal green 1867 for Jane Tibbett and William Robert Reynolds, who could be her first husband.
i noticed in the 1881 census that Joseph and jane had a son called Alfred Chapman born 1867. Could he have been Jane's son from first marriage? I cant find him in 1871 census either.
The only other clue is in 1901 they have a nephew called John Farmer living with them.
Any thoughts or help on this would be gladly appreciated.
many thanks in advance
shelly
