Hi Margaret,

Just spent some time looking at the info you posted - I think the 1871 mistranscribed census looks like it is the family after John died - well done!! (also thank you Jim), I would never have found it. I am going to try and see if birth certs (in Bolton) for James & Ann could be correct (according to my notes they had told me previously that its not the correct one for Ann), this time I might play it a little different and make out I don't know name of mother -and just insist that father's info be taken. If they both turn out totally wrong then will presume they were both born in Ireland.

One of the biggest problems I've had is being unable to find John the Tailor - alive 1861 and dead by next census!!!!! and obviously no marriage for him in England that i can tie up.

I have various certs for two youngest children - even their marriages but these two birth certs have been illusive. My g. grandfather James married in 1882 aged 19 so really would expect his birth to be 1863 and Ann married in 1881 aged 20 according to their certificates - Which does make me think of Ireland births. Then I'll have a massive job finding them - somewhere in Mayo.

Have got some info from MAYO ancestors site, which I can try, although will need to look at different years in case John was married before!!.

Thanks for your help will let you know about certificates

Regards,

Pat

Magaret,

Morning, i never gave it a thought that John had been married before, as he was so young when he died (29). I have to be at work at 9.15 so hadn't better get too much into this or I'll be late. Will have a good look when I get back after 3.00, but it does look pretty good!

Probably why Bolton told me wrong parents for Ann's birth cert. eh! I also had not been able to find a marriage for John & bridget and had started to think they had never married at all

Be in touch later
Many thanks
Pat

Bridget's surname is Kelly - that's from Mary Ellen & Margaret's bc's plus its on her death cert in 1895 - also showing John as a Tailor (deceased)

You know Bridget's surname. Is that from one of the children's birth certs? If so which one?

Ozibird Report 13 Mar 2009 19:51

I think the wife is Mary. I can't work out where the "J" came from. If you look at Mary Birch in a previous household they are very similar.

The children are born in Ireland so the marriage probably took place there.

It might have been a good idea to copy the family from a census onto here or put the 1861 Source Citation

PatB243 Report 13 Mar 2009 17:06

Could somebody please take a look at 1861 census and help with some queries, as I don' t want to see what "I'm expecting to see", if you get what I mean.

I'm looking for:- John DURKIN (GG GF) - Tailor (Journeyman) with wife Bridget, both born in Ireland and residing in Yorkshire area. On 1861 census the wife's name is listed as "J", and doesn't even look like Bridget.

1. Any ideas what it could be?

Bridget & John had 3 daughters Ann (1861c born in Bolton), Margaret (1865 Leeds), Mary Ellen (1868 Bradford) according to info on 1881 census, with correct address month before son's wedd. cert). Son James (G GF) - 1863c born Ireland) according to previous family info. I have bc's for Margaret & Mary Ellen with correct parents, but cannot find bc for Ann with correct parents.

2. Could the 1881 census stating Bolton as Ann's birthplace be incorrect? or could it be the 1861 that is wrong?

3. James has always been stated as born in Ireland, do you think that the family would actually have gone to Ireland for his birth?

3. Plus I was never aware of another son, I suppose he died very young - I'm having a job finding his death information or am I presuming too much?

and finally

4. Any idea what the address is on manuscript? - looks a bit like 46 Bh/Bk HAY????? St

Any help would be very appreciated.

Pat
