Struggling to find a place of birth

I just thought, I don't know if Rochdale Register Office issues BMD certificates - some of them do, some of them don't - but you may be able to ring them up and ask if they can look for an Elsie Clark born c. 1914 with a father named Frank. They will often look a year or so either side for you, too.

I did this with Ormskirk - I had two deaths I wanted to find but two possible dates for each, so I phoned up, gave my card details and said I was looking for the deaths of Elizabeth and William Hurst, father John, dying in either 1852 or 1854 and they found them for me. Only charged £7 per certificate, no additional look up fee either.

(Mind you, that is only going to work if she was born in the area covered by the district of Rochdale.)

Thanks for the help so far
I have checked Charles Swallow's death certificate and the informant was Eileen checked free BMD she was born in 1925 with parents Swallow/Walker.

I am happy with Charles Swallow being from Rochdale, but as there are 94 Elsies born between 1913 and 1915 I think I need something more substantial to go off. As there are no living relatives is there any way without waiting 20 years for the 1931 census that I can link her to a place.

Again thanks for your help.

Marriages Jun 1914 (>99%)

Clarke Frank Jones Rochdale 8e 30
Jones Minnie Clarke Rochdale 8e 30

Births Mar 1914 (>99%)

CLARKE Elsie Jones Chorlton 8c 1335

I know I know, there's a discrepancy in registration ............. they might have married after her birth, and yet Frank went with mother to register the birth, or they changed the registration after birth

or it's just wishful thinking, as I said!!

That birth record for Elsie is wrong

I checked for a marriage Clarke/Fairclough, and the man's name was Albert Clarke

BUT Gilbert said that Elsie's father was called Frank

I did find another possibility, but it might be waving in the wind!!!

I found a marriage Frank Clarke in Rochdale, maiden name Jones

Then I found an Elsie Clarke mmn Jones registered in Chortlotn

I don't know whether this is just wishful thinking though!!

I'll post the two registrations in a minute

I will order a certificate for Charles as I assume they met in Rochdale but is there any way that I can be sure that this is the correct Charles Swallow once I have the certificate?

Again thanks for all your help.

Could this be Elsie's birth? The age on the death record could be wrong -

Elsie Clarke Mar 1914 Rochdale 8e 112 mother - Fairclough

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 15 Mar 2009 20:44

and this is a possible marriage of Charles parents

Marriages Dec 1914 (>99%)

Swallow Charles Walker Rochdale 8e 78
Walker Florence Swallow Rochdale 8e 78

from www.freebmd.org.uk

this is a possible for Charles Swallow

Births Mar 1915 (99%)

Swallow Charles Walker Rochdale 8e 91

Walker is mother's maiden name

To find out any more, you have to buy the certificate for £7 from www.gro.gov.uk

Sorry

Elsie was born about 1914 and Charles was born about 1915

I will just have look on the death index, Gilbert - the death indexes from that time should have the age of the deceased on them.

Did Elsie die as Elsie Swallow, do you know?

Does Elsie's marriage certificate to Frederick say how old she was?

that could give us a line on finding her birth certificate ...... or at least on knowing when to start searchign for it

Hello this is my first post so be gentle.

I have a couple in my tree Elsie Clarke and Charles Swallow. Elsie died in 1958 and Charles in 1956 both in Rochdale/Littleborough. Elsie married Fredderick Burke in 1932 in Rochdale and lived with Charles shortly afterwards and had children together. I have found Elsie's father Frank from the marriage certificate. Elsie's daughter had TB when she was young and spent some time in Wales supposedly with family but sadly she is no longer around to ask.
How do I go about finding out where they were born as everything I have found so far is around Rochdale and Littleborough?

Thanks in advance.
