In England, a marriage is usually recorded in three places. Firstly, there's the official record of the marriage in the local register; secondly, there's usually a copy in the church register; thirdly, a copy of the local register will be made and kept at the GRO. The previous answers relate to the GRO index. However, you can also purchase a marr cert from the local RO wgo hold the original record, and their indices are sometimes online too. E.g.,
http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/
http://www.northeastbmd.org.uk/
to cite the two URLs I've got bookmarked. The info in the indices isn't always the same, as the following entry shows:
Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1841
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
HESMONDHALGH David NORCROSS Ellen Ribchester, St Wilfred Preston 245/1/55

Not only is the info in the marriage index different - it can be difft in other indices too:
Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1841
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
HESMONDHALGH Agnes Alston Preston NORCROSS ALST/2/37

Just adding my confirmation to Jonesey's reply - sometimes when you only get only reply you can be a bit scepital - but it is dead right.

Good luck
