There was, apparently, an emigration scheme (similar to the 1950s one) to Australia in the 19th century for settlers. The people who took advantage of it were not convicts!

I am not sure about the dates, but one of my g.g.+ uncles, Walter Rowe Hill (born c1815) from Cornwall was one of them. I believe (but am not sure) there was a sum of money given for housing and he built a house in Adelaide. After a couple of years he made his way further East and founded the town of Scotts Creek (you can find it on Google).

I suspect that quite a few other people from the same area also went because there are also Jewells from Cornwall in Australia and they are my grandmothers family. There must be some information somewhere about the scheme.

Since he had 4 children in Australia, you should be able to get their birth certs, and that will tell you his occupation at the time.

If you want to put the names/dates on here, I'm sure someone will find their birth registrations.

Never gave that one a thought. Would there be any records available that may give me any info?

A man, his wife, son and daughter, leave for Australia sometime soon after 1853. (The daughter was born in 1851 and the son in 1853) They had 4 more children who were born in Australia, 1856, 1857, 1860, 1864.

By the time of the 1871 census the family are back in the UK.

Bearing in mind how long it took to travel half way round the world in the mid 1800s.

..A) Why would he have gone to Australia?

and

B) Why would he have returned?

In the 1851 census his occupation is "Tallow Chandler" Living in North Woolwich.

In the 1871 census Richards` occupation is "Tallow Chandler" living in Woolwich, West Ham.

In the 1881 census he is an "Engine driver at works" still living in Woolwich.

In the 1891 census he is "Harbour tide waiter" Still in Woolwich.

Any thoughts please???
