Am I wrong?
The TTF Site is becoming very much like a place for finding The Living rather than a site for genealogy research which I understood was its original intention.

I'm afraid you are wrong.......TTF was originally set up to find living people..............it was not threaded, and one could only post on it if the surname was in one's tree.

By definition, one cannot 'find' a deceased person....one can only 'find out' about them

Well I never knew that !
I'm very reluctant if ever to look for living people.
Cheers for correcting me.

It is not a thing that I do,very often.
Read the Success board and it becomes very clear that finding living people is an important part of Genes.

As with most things today, the discipline has gone from the site..............very few people bother to adhere to any codes of conduct, or to use discretion when asking for - or giving - info.

I was responding to the OP's query about the original purpose of TTF........and explaining how it worked..........at that time. Now it seems to be a free-for-all..............

Well Alan and Ricochet, I never knew that either. I have recently been annoyed at the number of people posting on the Tips board re deceased rellies that I thought would be better posted on the TTF board. Seems I am wrong.

Maybe the boards have become merged and we might need a new split.

TTF Living
TTF Dead
Tips on searching (which is what I thought the Tips board was for). e.g. how to find army records, how to use the IGI, people overseas, etc.

Oh Margaret - if only ... I do wish there were permanent tips on the boards.

I think a lot of the problem is people who filter the boards by surname and don't approach the boards from the Community tab. If they approached from there they might then get the idea a bit better - and pehaps take some time reading a few threads to get the hang of the boards. Would make things a bit simpler all round.

As a newcomer, I initially felt quite upset reading this thread as I have been searching for possible living relatives as well as ancestors. If one has never experienced the loss of a "living relative" (my late mother spent her life thinking that she was an orphaned only child when she wasn't ) than I guess that it is not as easy to empathise with someone who has. In the short space of time that I have been using this site, I have come across some lovely people who genuinely enjoy and take pleasure from helping others and it really doesn't matter to them whether they are searching for living relatives or ancestors. It's the helping that counts .........

I'm sure that there is room for everyone on this site; those trying to find a relative, those that just enjoy the challenge of finding an ancestor, or those that genuinely just want to help others.

By the way Ricochet, I notice that you have recently been praised in the success stories for the help that you have given to another member ........ well done, us newbies need people like you!

Best wishes
Hilary
