Personally I don't think it is ever a good idea to search for living children on web pages.
It all may be perfectly innocent but then again it may not.
If people are genuinely looking for their children it should be done through the proper channels, ie- solicitors, family courts, family mediators.

Was your husband married to the Mother? I may be wrong but this happened to me and has also happened to my Step-son regarding his child.

A Mother cannot legally change her childrens surnames without the consent of the father if they are married at the time of the children's birth. My father would not allow the change of surname, so my brother and I changed it just by using our Step-Fathers surname. We were never able to change it legally. However I had my Step-Dad's surname for 34 yrs until I married my hubby. My brother has had the name for 37 yrs with no problems.

Also recently my ex-daughter in law wanted to change our Grand-daughters surname but was unable to do so without the consent of the childs father.

Hope this helps,

Lainey x

Unless they did it legally, ie the second husband adopted the boys, or they did it by deed poll, when you might be able to find something published or in a court report, then it might be impossible to find out.

Unfortunately, you don't have to do it by a lawyer or judge, or have the change published. It can just be done by usage.

so they might just have decided that the two boys should have the same name as the stepfather.

This happened to a cousin of mine .......... she was adopted by her mother's first husband, all done legally, but mother then lived common law with someone else. They decided to emigrate to another country, and changed the daughter's name again so "she would fit in with the family". There could have been major repercussions in the other country when it was discovered what ahd happened ........ but the authorities decided to let mother off with a warning and treat the daughter as an innocent victim!

People could (and still can) change their surname at will. Are you sure they actually changed it, or were just shown on the census with the new husband's surname - that is common?
