Sue,

Thank you for your help. This is the service man I suspected but could not confirm. Thank you for explaining about the records being destroyed and that his NOK would have had input into his records, and obviously due to her death this would not have happened. I was not aware of any of this so it is very helpful. I did not realise that the records were collated so much later. Thank goodness for this site and members like yourself , who are willing to share their knowledge. I will now go and investigate the Great War Forum site. I am so grateful.

Oh My word Rambling Rose, where did you find that? Thank you. Yes I think this is him. This is the one I saw on CWGC but with additional info which confirms it is him. I am so grateful.

Don't take any notice of Ancestry's STUPID errors over theatre of war in their transcriptions of the Soldiers Died in the Great War database - he did not die in ALDERSHOT

This is that George from CWGC

Name: BROWN, GEORGE
Initials: G
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Hampshire Regiment
Unit Text: 1st Bn.
Date of Death: 29/04/1915
Service No: 5658
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 35.
Memorial: YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL

If his widow was also dead by the time the additional information of age nok etc was collated in the early 20's it would explain why his details are so slim on this record

He has a medal card on Ancestry - shows he was a very early entrant to France - in August 1914 - but no service or pension record - they are supposed to have uploaded all records with surname beginning 'B' - so it is likely his were amongst the 60% destroyed by fire in WW2 bombing

For possible information on his regiment/service etc you could try the Great War Forum - www.1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums

Cheers
Sue

Hello Alison and Richochet,

Thank you for your questions. I know he lived in Micheldever Hampshire. He was born in Ropley Hampshire around 1880. His NOK was his wife Ada Brown. His niece who is in her 80's told me that he was killed 2 months before his son was born in August 1915, as her Mother then helped raise the children who were orphaned in 1919 when their mother also died. I am pretty sure he was in the army.

Sorry for not giving enough info before. What I am wondering is where do I acquire service records for this person. Am I correct in thinking these records are not available from The National Archives?

Thank you,

Lainey

UPDATE-I have found one possible just don't know how to confirm if it is him.

When was he born?

Where was he born?

Who would have been his NOK?

How do you know he was KIA in that three-month span?

Do you have a rough address for him?

Hello,

I am looking for any info regarding a relative called George Brown who was killed in action somewhere in Europe around May June, July 1915. I have checked CWGC site but there are a few George Browns on there. Does anyone have any ideas how I can narrow it down to the correct George as I do not have any other info regarding his regiment.

Thank you,

Lainey
