In 1851 he's a Pudler [Puddler] at the Iron Works - so the occupation fits.

Iron Puddler - Made wrought iron using the puddling process; a highly skilled and dangerous occupation which required physical strength, stamina and sustained concentration (http://rmhh.co.uk/occup/i-k.html)

Just throwing an idea in - could "Zanny" be short for Susanna(h)?

Well she's always transcribed as Sanny or Zanny or Lanny or Fanny (as close to, anyway) so I think that's her full name.

I would say it's a very local name. There are some more in other counties.

There's only a few on the IGI. They're mainly female but there are 3 males. It's possible it was a surname originally.
