work houses poor houses

i would much appreciate some advice on poor houses i think i found who im looking for,he was born in poor house in 1820 but mother died year after ,im wanting to know what happened to children left and how i should move on with this ,would love some advice ellamay

I have a relly in a workhouse, he doesn't seem to have been born there, indeed doesn't seem to have been born anywhere. I think they were places that anyone who was destitute could go to, and I imagine there were a lot of orphans, as was my ancestor.

Children would have been put to work as soon as old enough, say age 7 in those days. My g granddad was lucky enough to have been put with a shoemaker, so got a trade which he carried on until he died aged about 70. Hope your experience is as good.
