Hi

Thanks for your help everyone, I will have to do a bit more fact finding about Alfred J Francis (b 19 Jan 1921 in East Ham) but the original tip off about this death came from GR and I am now quite sure that it does not refer to my ancestor.

Best wishes
Hilary

Hilary - if you are definitely looking for an ALFRED FRANCIS who died in the British Army (rather than the Navy or RAF etc or the force of another allied country ) and the Suffolk Reg one isn't your man - the only other one from the original GRO WAR DEATHS ARMY OTHER RANKS (1939 to 1948) - on FMP - is

Pte ALFRED E FRANCIS - 4976388 - Sherwood Foresters - 1940 - 4 - 21

If it's possible he was navy (incl merchant navy) or air force they are also listed on FMP - but they should be on CWGC too

Otherwise - if you are looking for an ALFRED FRANCIS with middle initial J who died as a result of the war - did you see this one?

Name: FRANCIS, ALFRED JAMES
Initials: A J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Civilian
Regiment/Service: Civilian War Dead
Age: 31
Date of Death: 16/11/1940
Additional information: Fireman, A.F.S. Son of the late Edward and Emily Francis; husband of Maude Evelyn Francis, of 35 Lowther Drive, Enfield, Middlesex. Died at 83 Mansfield Road.
Casualty Type: Civilian War Dead
Reporting Authority: ST. PANCRAS, METROPOLITAN BOROUGH

His registration details will be the normal English ones - if he's the right one - yell out and someone can look it up for you if you can't find it

Otherwise he could just have died during the war period of 'natural causes' or have been a civilian casualty who missed out on being recorded by CWGC.

Maybe if you give us a little more of what you know for sure - it might help someone help you to get the right certificate

Cheers

Sue

I've just checked the GRO website again and you only need the name, year and GRO reference to order an overseas death certificate - not the qtr.

Make sure you are clicking on no. 10 (death certificate overseas events) and not no. 4 (death certificate England and Wales). Also make sure you tick the "yes" box to say you have the full GRO Reference.

Ordering military death certificates doesn't need the same information as for normal death certificates. If you got the death details from Findmypast website then the details they give are all that the GRO need. They shouldn't need the qtr.

Hi Jill

Thank you so much for finding this record. It's not the person that I am looking for but I think that it is the record shown in GR so at least I can discount it.

Best wishes

Hi

Thanks for the advice Jill but the death isn't listed on CWGC website. If anyone has any other ideas, I'd be grateful to hear them.

Thank you

Have you looked on the CWGC site? You might find enough detail on there to save you ordering the death cert.

I'm not sure that death certs issued for armed forces during WW1 and WW2 contain much more than "died in action" or "died of wounds" etc. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

But look on the CWGC site first - that should show the date of death.

Hi
I am a newbie and would like to order a death certificate for a world war 2 death that I have just found. However, the details (obtained from GR) only give the year (1944) page and volume 7/ 73 and not the quarter for Alfred J Francis of the Suffolk Regiment. The GRO office want the quarter that the death occured but it's not given on the GR page and I do not know where the death occured anyway. Please could someone advise how I get over this one?

Thank you!
Hilary
