Hello,

I have an old marriage record from St. Andrew's Scots Church (1847). Beside the names of the witnesses there is an X before their last name and this is the same for the bride e.g Christopher X Ash and Mary X Ash.

Would anyone be able to tell me what the X means?

Thank you very much.

Kind Regards,

Sarah

Not familiar with Scottish certs, but I'm assuming they signed an X for their names because they couldn't write.
