I suppose Rutland Belle would regard the transcribers at Ancestry as very PC - they will often hide the disability in the place of birth (although I think the reference to Fife somewhat unflattering):
Name Birth Year Birthplace Relation RESIDENCE
James Donaldson abt 1835 Pileshire Blind One Eye, Scotland Boarder Everton, Lancashire
RG13/3478/106/27

The ticks are probably just the enumerator's marks as he worked through his patch.
As Richochet says it would specify if there was a disabilty and you will come across very un-PC terms such as Idiot or Imbecile I'm afraid.

Have you checked the same person in the 1891 census. If they did have a disability it may show in that census. Irene

If there was any form of disability, it would be specified in the column........for example, if someone was blind, it would actually say so.

hello, newbie here been looking at census records for 1901.
think I've found the right family, lots of lovely info.
question tho!
last column of form has disabilities listed, so.... if there is what looks like a pencil dash, or sort of 1, does that relate to disabilities listed?
Daft question probably, only one relative is listed as a school teacher but has dash/1 in column, so is it possible she was still a teacher even tho deaf??
Prob just me being bit thick? any ideas?
