http://www.twrcomputing.co.uk/store/Family_Tree_Maker_2006.html

They have got the 2006 Who do you think you are version for just under £20 including p and p and three months ancestry essential sub. (The ancestry sub alone is worth nearly £20 for 3 months)

LOL, lots of people must think like me, as the old 2006 is more expensive that the 2008 on there now.

Hi, oh yes it is! I changed from XP to Vista about a year ago and it was very easy to download the patch (update) from FTM2006 to use with Vista - as Brinsley has advised above :)

I know people say the 2009 is wonderful once you get used to it but I just dont feel comfortable with it like I do my old 2006 and I do still like the benefit of internet back up for my records. You get it free for a few months I believe then they ask if you want to renew it for about £7 a year or something - oh, well worth it.

Here is the Vista patch

http://past.familytreemaker.com/vistaupdate/

Works for 2005, 2006 & V 16 (which is virtually the same as 2006)

FTM 2006 IS compatible with Vista. You need to dowmload a patch.

See below for details

twr computing sell it for a tenner still I think incl p and p and a months ancestry sub - and they give you telephone support free if you want it.

I have 4 different versions but tend to use 2006 most of the time.

You can save gedcoms to your puter and just import it into FTM no bother. Use the help button on the program for any queries you have, its very good.

"To open a GEDCOM file or another file in Family Tree Maker for Windows:

1. From the File menu, click Open

2. Click the Files of type drop-down list and then select the appropriate type, for example, you would select GEDCOM (*.GED) for a GEDCOM file.

3. In the Look in field at the top of this dialog box, select the drive and folder where the file you want to open is located and then select the file name. If you are unsure where your file is, click the Find file button at the bottom of the dialog box and follow the instructions in Finding files.

4. Click Open.

Family Tree Maker displays the Import File dialog box.

5. In the File Name field, Family Tree Maker uses the name of the GEDCOM file but with the FTW extension. You can accept this default suggestion or enter a new name in this field. In either event the new file name must end with the FTW extension. Family Tree Maker will make a copy of your file and convert the copy to a Family Tree Maker for Windows file

6. In the Location field, Family Tree Maker suggests a location for your converted file. This will normally be the drive and folder where you installed Family Tree Maker. (usually C:\FTW).

You can either click OK to accept the name and location that Family Tree Maker suggests or type a new name and/or location and then click OK. Again, the file name must have the extension .FTW.

Family Tree Maker reloads your file as a Family Tree Maker for Windows file and then displays the Import from GEDCOM dialog box. "

However, Id prefer to use the 2006 as my main program as you can back it up to internet storage (use that function, I lost my hard drive once with 5 years family tree work - what a relief to see it all reappear at the click on a button from internet back up - only 2006 has that facility). Also, you can make your own home page on the internet which you can password protect and anyone you want in the world to view it can do so.

It depends whether you already have an FTM tree file, and whether or not you want to merge the new one into the existing one or start a new file altogether. FTM can work with as many files as you wish, but will always open the last one used, by default. If you are going to work with multiple files make sure first that you know where they are stored so you can find them.

Ok. To simply open the new file either double click on the file, which should automatically open FTM and then load the file in, or open FTM and select Open from the File menu, then select the file you want.

To merge the file with an existing one, open FTM then select Apend / Merge, then follow the prompts. If you are going to merge and are not too familiar, make sure you have a copy of BOTH files first, and as I said above, know where to find them on your PC

I have my main tree on Ancestry.co.uk as I prefer this to work in.

I have been dowloading a GEDCOM to my desktop and then importing into GR without many problems other than a bit of a delay sometimes in my tree being accessible.

I have now bought FTM 2006 and want to have this on my PC. I hoped to be able to carry on working on Ancestry.co.uk and downloading a GEDCOM as before to import into GR and also into FTM to update that.

Is this possible? I can only see EXPORT functions for GEDCOMs on FTM. Is there a simple way round this for the computer illiterate?
