ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Kathlyn Report 29 Mar 2009 15:13

I have found Adeline Chalklen in the 1871 and 1881 census living in the Woolwich and West Ham areas but I am unable to find her in the 1891 census. She married in West Ham in 1892.

She was born in Australia in 1856.

Thanks in anticipation

What is her married name?

Looking at the marriage reference her married name was either Bear or Ward.

Here's the key:

Name: Louisa Chalklin
Name: Thomas Walter Bear
Year of Registration: 1888
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: West Ham
County: Essex, Greater London
Volume: 4a
Page: 187

Name: Louisa Bear
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1861
Year of Death Registration: 1891
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Age at Death: 30
District: West Ham
County: Essex, Greater London
Volume: 4a
Page: 88

Adeline married her sister Louisa's widower.,

Now it all fits.

The ages are irrelevant - no Victorian woman would admit to being considerably older than her husband.

All these names are sisters of Adeline.

This is research I am doing for a friend and he gave me the following info passed down through the family:-----

Louisa Chalklen married Thomas Walter Bear in 1888, they had two children. Louisa left her husband and children, went back to Australia with a sailor.!!!!!!!

This research is giving me a slightly different outlook on this.

Louisa married Thomas Bear in West Ham 1888, they had two children. She died in the last quarter of 1891 ??? (I have found a death for a Louise Bear in West Ham)

In the first quarter of 1892, Thomas Walter Bear married Adeline Chalklen, in West Ham.

Is this a coincidence or does it throw a bucket of cold water on the handed down family story?????

Thought very welcome.

That`s right Paul, exactly what I am thinking. Mind you Thomas Bear did not let his wife get too cold before he married Adeline!!

Louisa and Thomas married in 1888 and their two children were born in jas 1889 and jas 1891. For Thomas to have married again in amj 1892 he must have been a widow, pushing the family story right out the window.

Sorry to add to the confusion but there is this marriage:

Name: Thomas Walter Bear
Name: Louisa Chart
Year of Registration: 1889
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: St George in The East
County: London, Middlesex
Volume: 1c

Personally i think Paul has hit the nail on the head.......Adeline married her dead sisters husband the year after her death........ the death cert for Louisa Bear in 1891 would confirm it all. Pauls correct, ignore the ages, lying about age was VERY common. Walter would have needed a mother for his children, hence the very hasty marriage.........

Here's the family on the 1911 census in Wandsworth - now it's Louisa born 1870!!!

BEAR EDITH F 1893 18 Wandsworth London
BEAR EDNA F 1909 2 Wandsworth London
BEAR LOUISA F 1870 41 Wandsworth London
BEAR MABEL F 1890 21 Wandsworth London
BEAR THOMAS WALTER M 1868 43 Wandsworth London

Do you get the feeling that this family are not being entirely truthful?

And to think I wanted a nice quite Sunday afternoon !!!!!!!!!!!!

I have just ordered the death cert for Louisa, and fingers crossed, it will be the correct one.

I think this site should be re-named "Genes Reunted Detective Agency", boy but I think we would all qualify, don`t you??

Just had a quick look on the 1911 census and find the following..

Adeline Bear, South Australia 1872, along with her daughter Adeline, North Woolwhich, 1903
Thomas Bear, Bermondsey, 1873.

Oh yes, I am sure this is "my" family but mighty age porkies have been told along the way me thinks.
