In 1871 I have Daniel Mathers 29, Chimney Sweep, Anna 29 and Eliza 3, all born Macclesfield, Cheshire and living there. I believe Eliza is actually Eliza Ellen (b Dec Q 1867). Problem is I can find nothing else about them until Eliza Ellen marries John Thomas Ingham in Sept 1891. I have tried variations of surname and am aware that chimney sweeps often travelled around to large country estates, but no sign of the family. Also no sign of a marriage of Daniel, nor of his whereabouts before marriage.

Can anyone find something that I can't?

Tania, I'll have to ponder the death as I believed she married in 1891.

Wilma, off to look at the 1861 census - I thought I had tried Matthews, must have missed this one. The chimney sweep sounds hopeful.

I believe that could be the right Eliza E, the 1901 family is mine - not helped by the fact the the fella she married was not born Ingham but took the name of his mother's husband, and that he isn't there in 1901.
