Please could anyone tell me how to search the National Archives. I am looking for my GGG grandfather who was a policeman on the 1861 census but when he died in 1866 his occupation was chelsea pensioner. I don't know what regiment he was in nor when. My gg.grandmother was born in Scotland in 1852 so am assuming he was there then. He could have been in the Crimean war which I understand was about 1856-58. Do the NA give details of pensioners, I don't seem to be able to work round their site. Any help would be appreciated.

Chelsea Pensioners do have a site and a museum - google for it.

Only those who were discharged to pension (Chelsea Pensioners) up to 1854 are name indexed on the National Archives Catalogue. To seach these, put the surname into the search box and WO97 into the reference to be searched. If he left 1855-1872 then you would HAVE to know his regiment to find his records. These aren't online though - you would need to go there or get someone to go for you

His childrens birth certificates may give details of his regiment - worth a try!

A big thank you to everyone especially was plain ann now annielaurie for her suggestion about obtaining birth cert. Unfortunatley I couldn't find any entry for my gg grandmother but found her sister and have just received the cert. this morning which gives me all the information I need to research this family further.

A big thank you to everyone.
