Burial Plot Numbers

Just thinking some more, my hubby's grandparents are buried in a local churchyard. The church undertook a complete review of graves a few years ago which is now published at the local register office, but hubby's grandparents are not on the list. When I queried it with the church they said they had no idea why the grave had not been recorded, but confirmed there was such a grave in the churchyard.

How can I insist that they find the grave?

Hi Erica

Was he buried in a churchyard or in a municipal cemetery? If the latter, then he wouldn't appear in Parish Records, cos they are for church burials.

Erica
It's interesting that you can't find the burial recorded in the parish registers.
I am in the same position and also know where the grave is and have often visited my grandfather's plot.
In my case, Grandad was buried in the nearby cemetery as the churchyard was full. The council records show that the village vicar officiated, so I'm at a loss to know why it isn't in the parish register.
I hope you find what you need.

I visited my local churchyard the other year looking for someone else's ancestor's grave. The chap who showed me round - the verger I think? - had a map which they kept in the vestry which showed all the graves - and details of who was in the plots. Good thing too in my case as there was no headstone. So, worth chatting to the chap who has access to the vestry in case he can help.

I'm looking for evidence of where my Grandfather was buried. I have his death certificate and have visited his grave many times but when I looked in the parish burial records he wasn't listed. The archivist suggested that they simply might have forgotten to write it in at the time. Are there records on plot numbers or a map of where people were buried within the church grounds? I know that his gravestone was put there some years later when my Grandmother died.
