Thanks for the suggestions - will go looking for staffords in the 1861 and 71 census. Will give me something to do next week while I am off on holiday :-)

I'd be inclined to trawl up and down the neighbouring roads as Jill has suggested, but I would be looking for someone with the surname Stafford, as this was often how the father of an illegitimate child was "mentioned" - by giving the child the father's surname as a second forename.

Seems fairly strong.

I have a similar situation. One of my trollope-y gr gr gr grandma's registered the birth of her penultimate child using just her married name - no maiden name shown, no father shown. The trouble was that her husband was still alive at the time. She never registered the birth of her last child and he was born some time after her husband died. I don't for a minute think the last child was the child of her husband, and I have serious doubts as to the penultimate child being his daughter as well. I think that's why she used her married name but gave no other info. It was maybe the closest she could come to telling the truth.

You could, in the 1861 and 1871 censuses, trawl up and down that road and the neighbouring roads to see if there are any other Wilkie/Wilke families ... and if you can't find any then it looks like your man is connected.

My husband's G Grandfather is called Robert Wilkie and in the 1871 and 1881 census he is shown living with his mother Joan (sometimes spelt Johann) and his brother George who wass born in 1864 in Gateshead.

There is only one George Wilkie registered in 1864 in Gateshead and that is George Stafford Wilkie. So I purchased the birth cert and found out that he was born 2/4/1864 to a mother Joanna Wilkie (no maiden surname) and no recorded father.

The problem I have is that I know that Robert's mother was widowed in 1861 with a maiden name of Brack.

Also George was born at 32 Nelson St and the 1861 census shows the Wilkie family living at 42 Nelson Street.
This makes me assume that I have the correct family.

Is this strong enough to say that I have found the correct George?
Any suggestions would be gratefully acccepted.
