Thank you to everyone who gave me advice. I have now located my great grandfather. My great grandfather William was registered under the suname of his mother Esthers first husband.

My great great grandfather was Esthers second husband and by the 1911 census Esther was married to her third husband.

I can only assume my great grandfather was given this surname so his name matched his brothers and sisters.

It isn't complete yet. Wales is still to come, plus Northumberland, Westmorland and Cumberland. Also the
Isle of Man
Channel Islands
Royal Navy (ships at sea at time of census)
Military Establishments (overseas)

Thank you will keep looking for family as the name could have been mistranscribed or the y could be living on a county border as preveous relations have done.

Hi Tawny, I don't know if you can search by counties, but I'd suggest you don't put in an area and see what comes up. I've done this and found my family. So good luck.

Does anyone know if the searchable counties on the 1911 census are complete or not as I cannot find my great grandfather who would have been six years old.

My gg grandmother had a child in Hertfordshire in 1909 and another child in 1912 in the same county so it is unlikely the family had moved.
