Whenever you add a reply to a thread it moves to the top of the board. Adding a nondescript message (such as the word nudge) does just that, making the thread easier to find.

Go and have a look at the tips board and you will see Glens treads, that I mentioned somewhere near to this reply, timed around 6:26 on 8 Apr

sorry to sound no naive but what does "nudged them up" mean. Is there somewhere I need to go to find this thread?

I think the most you can do is put a "note" into your tree, giving the file name of the relevant image. Notes are imported/exported as part of the gedcom.
You could also have "Windows Explorer" open, and navigated to your image folder, so you can click on the appropriate image when you see the note.
NB Windows Explorer is found under Start - All Programes - Accessories

You can do no better than read the two excellent threads from Glen on the subjects of Gedcom files and using family tree software. I have nudged them up for you.

Unfortunately, the gedcom format is a text only file and does not support the transfer of photographs or images, as you have found.

Gedcom is the international standard format of ancestry files.
A gedcom file can be imported into any ancestry / family tree software.

You can get free software from
www.familysearch.org and
http://www.myheritage.com/family-tree-builder

I keep all my records in offline software and from time to time import my tree (gedcom file) into GR so I can look for tree matches and contacts.

As far as I know with GR exporting the gedcom file is for 1) keeping a back up of your tree on your computer 2) importing into other software 3) passing on your tree to another person
Unlikely that photos would be exported but presumably you have them on your computer anyway.

I have just exported my first gedcom file but don't really know what the advantage is - I can just see it in another application but in a different way. Also all the time I have taken to upload photos into my GR tree has been wasted as the photos have not been exported. Can anyone explain this gedcom lark to me as there doesn't seem to be any step by step guides as to what you're supposed to do with them once you've got them. Also, can anyone recommend good free software for a gedcom file which "sees" photos from GR but also allows audio/video files to be uploaded?
