You may find that James is mentioned in a Will of his supposed father.
We have one where a man with a different surname to his son mentions, ...' My hatural son Thomas Davies '

Rickinghall Inferior Parish Records 1653-1984 are held at the Ipswich Branch of Suffolk Records Office. When he was baptised it may show his fathers name in the parish records. The records office may be worth an email. Good luck Irene

Hi Jim

Thats what i am trying to find out, i have been told i may be able to find a ' bastardry order ' among parish records but have no idea how to find them.

I know parish records for Rickinghall are kept at Ipswhich but have no idea about looking for bastardry records, he must have got the name from somewhere and there is a Robert Collins on ww1 mem. in a village close to Rickinghall

On my G/G/father James Baxter 1869 birth cer has mother Elizabeth Baxter no father, at his wedding he has father Robert Collins soldier.
I know people sometimes invented a father to look respectable but surely he would have invented a father with the same surname as him.
I have looked and there are a cpl of Robert Collins born right time and place just not sure how/if i can tie them to my g/g/father
