so to answer your question

Jane xxxxx married Mr Mawdesley

Then Jane Mawdesley married Mr Phillips, and she appears on the 1881 Census as Jane Phillips

Then for some reason, she reverted to her first married name Jane Mawdesley, for the 1891 Census ............ either she reverted, or whoever told the enumerator her name forgot that she had been a Phillips. The fact that she is noted as Married on the 1891 might just be a forgetful moment on someone's part

OR of course, she could always have left Richard Phillips ...... marriage breakup was by any means uncommon in those days, but people could not afford divorces.

John Occleshaw married an Ann Mawdsley ........ which implies that Ann's mother married a Phillips as her seond husband ........... so she was reverted to her previous name on the later census

Marriages Sep 1863 (>99%)

Mawdesley Ann Wigan 8c 55
Occleshaw John Wigan 8c 55

????Possibly Jane's marriage registration to Mr Phillips?????????

Marriages Sep 1863 (>99%)

Maudsley Jane Wigan 8c 89
Mawdsley Jane Wigan 8c 89
Phillips Richard Wigan 8c 89

I note that the transcriber wasn't sure how Jane's name was spelt in the record books!

There are several possible reasons for the name change. The person giving the information to the enumerator in 1891 could have forgotten that she had remarried Richard Phillips and gave her previous name (or perhaps they couldn't remember her "new" name). But I notice it also says she is married in 1891 and that she is John's mother (not in law).

Mind you, I can't find a suitable death of Richard Phillips, so perhaps he was still alive.....

I think it is likely the same woman though.

I agree with Helen, should think Jane Phillips reverted back to Mawdsley by 1891.

Could Jane Mawdsley (mother) have reverted back to her first married name for the 1891 census.

Given her age, she looks as if she is definitely the previous ... Jane Phillips.

I've had this happen in my family. Someone reverting back to their maiden name between census.

Following on from my previous post, just so I can say that I am not loosing my marbles, would some kind person do a check for me then give me their thoughts???

1881 census
John Occleshaw
1843
Born in Ince
living in Wigan
Wife Ann

In this census Jane Phillips, aged 56 is described as Mother in law, and Jane Mawdsley as Sister in Law. (This is the Jane Mawdsley of my previous thread and she married a William Taylor a few months after the census.)

In the 1891 census for the Occleshaw household, Jane Mawdsley, aged 67 is recorded as Mother in Law. I am almost positive that Jane Phillips did not marry a Mr. Mawdsley, but am concerned and very confused.

I have to go off line now, but any comments that can be made will be very gratefully received.

This Mawdsley family of mine has been nothing but trouble from the word go.

Kathlyn

With a 10 year gap between census, how could the enumerator have called her Jane Mawdsley?
