Thank you again everyone. I think the sensible thing is to list the possibilities (I had found some and you have given others) and visit reg offices (and/or LMA as advised). On the other hand, I might send my sister - she lives in London so not so much of a trek as from the wilds of Wiltshire!

Thanks to all again.

It could be a tough one. They moved all over the place. Married in Westminster, births elsewhere, Wandsworth in 1901.

By the way, MMN was Read.

There's always a chance she had a child or 2 before she married as she was 29 in 1901.

Make a list of family names on each side and see if any stand out.

Maxmillian,
If the local registry offices can't / won't help (some aren't very "family tre friendly"!), you could try a visit to the LMA (if you're close to London), using the list of possible as a start to narrow down the parishes.
This obviously assumes that they survived long enough to be christened.

Thanks Rose. I hadn't quite got the difference between the messages bit and the threads bit - sorry!

Walter and Louisa married in late 1900. In 1901 census there is no mention of children. In 1911, she is noted as having had 5 children, 2 surviving (Edward Alfred b1902 reg Lambeth and Charles b1906 reg Lambeth and Chelsea). Thus my guess that the 3 non survivors were born 1901-1911 at the outside.

Thanks everyone - I think I'll try my luck at the register office concerned unless Rose can help!.

Rose - As I said, I've located a number of possible births in various London districts but I can't tie any of the possibilities to a maiden name. The children's surnames were Double, mother's maiden name Ball, there were 3 children that were born and died between 1901 and 1911(in addition to 2 surviving, Edward Alfred b1902 and Charles b1906). Edward Alfred was registered in Lambeth and Charles in Chelsea . Do you think you can get further?

Regards

Max

If you can locate the births that will help.

What's the surname/maiden name and district?

No, you can't look at birth certificates without buying them.

However if you order a birth certificate you can give the parent's names as a checking point so that the certificate is not issued if the parent's names are not what you give. In this case the GRO will keep £3 for doing the search and refund you the other £4 of the £7 certificate cost.

Sometimes local register offices will not charge for the search.

I know that my grandmother gave birth to 3 children who did not survive infancy/childhood. I don't know their names but have a good idea about where and when they were born/died. With this I have a number of possibilities from the death registers. Here's the question - I don't want to buy all the possible certs because some may be wrong. Is one allowed (on a visit to the appropriate office) to peruse the possibilities to choose the right ones? Hope that make sense!
