Whoops - this is what comes of worrying at something for years. You forget bits unless you write them down at the time.

Have just rechecked 1851 census for John and Eleanor Taylor and their daughter Eleanor is with them as Eleanor Waters, married. Have not found a marriage of a George Henry to an Eleanor Waters subsequently though.

Chapter III

This is what I know about Eleanor Taylor:

Maiden name of Taylor given on birth certificate of daughter, Eleanor.

From IGI: born 17 Dec 1827, United Presbyterian, Spittal, Northumberland (should this in fact be christened?). Parents: John Taylor and Eleanor. John and Eleanor Taylor are on the 1861 census, aged in their 60s, living in Bridge Street, Berwick. Eleanor Henry (Eleanor Taylor's first child) was born in Bridge St, Berwick in 1855. (On the strenght of this and the fact that the age fits I lean towards John and Eleanor Taylor being this Eleanor's parents, but it's a bit weak!)

1841 census: John Taylor, Head, age 47, smith. Living in Bridge St, Berwick on Tweed. Also in household: El. Taylor, (f), age 42; R. Taylor, (m), age 20; Elh Taylor, (f), age 15; Eln Taylor, (f), age 13; Isob Taylor, (f), age 6; Jas Taylor (m), age 4; Wm Taylor (m), age 2.

1851 census: I can't find her. Perhaps she had married someone else and was a widow when she married (or co-habited with) George Henry? But I have not tracked down an appropriate marriage for this possibility either.

1855 (birth of daughter Eleanor): Informant Eleanor Henry, formerly Taylor, mother. Address: Bridge Street, Berwick

1861 census: George Henry, Head, 29, Mason, born Lesbury, Northumberland. Address: Boarding school yard, Berwick on Tweed Also in household: Eleanor Henry, wife, 33, born Berwick. Eleanor T. Henry, daughter, 5. James T, son, 4 months.

1863: Death at Castlegate, Berwick. Described on death cert as names Ellen, aged 34, wife of George Henry, mason. Informant was George Henry, present at the death.

Eleanor Taylor was the first wife of George Henry. His second wife was Ann Allan. Ann came from Holy Island and her father, James Allan, was a fisherman. On the gravestone of James and Elizabeth Allan, on Holy Island, is also mentioned their daughter Margaret Taylor Allan. Was Elizabeth Allan formerly Elizabeth Taylor, and if so, was she related to Eleanor Taylor, possibly her aunt. In which case, on the death of his first wife, George Henry then married her cousin, which seems feasible.

Have now found a marriage for Elizabeth Taylor, Alnwick, 1841 (one yr before birth of first known child). One of the possible names for husband is James Allan. Also found marriage for Eleanor Taylor, Alnwick, 1854 (one yr before birth of Eleanor Taylor Henry, first known child). Now have marriage cert for this Eleanor Taylor and it is not the right one. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!!

Chapter II

On the certificate of his marriage to Ann Allan, George gives his father’s name as John Henry, Mason. Now, John Henry married Mary Ann Carr in Bamburgh in 1814. I have checked the filmed parish registers for Bamburgh and can confirm this, and also the baptisms in Bamburgh for 6 of their 7 children. George was the youngest and I have not yet found his baptism. He does give his place of birth as Lesbury on a couple of the censuses, so I have checked the parish records for Lesbury as well, but still have not found him. Irritatingly, he is never to be found on a census along with his parents, but I still have John and Mary Ann down as his parents for 2 reasons.

1. George gives John’s name and occupation on his second marriage certificate.

2. In the 1871 census, George’s daughter Ellen is down as living in the household of George and Eleanor Ross in Bamburgh as a servant. Now, Eleanor Ross was the eldest daughter of John and Mary Ann Henry, so Ellen Henry would be her niece. (It seems a bit harsh to describe her as servant, but I suppose if George Ross is filling in the census form he might regard that as his relationship to her rather than wife’s niece).

TinaTheCheshirePussyCat Report 10 Apr 2009 14:37

George Henry was my great-great grandfather and his wife, Eleanor Henry (nee Taylor) was my great-great grandmother. Despite years of trying I have failed miserably to find either George’s baptism or George and Eleanor’s marriage certificate so I thought I would throw the whole thing open to the combined experience of this board to see if anyone can come up with any suggestions that I have missed. (And yes, I am aware that there is always the possibility that they were never married – but that is kind of the last resort!)

This is what I know about George.

1841 census: George Henry (10), born Northumberland. Living with James (40) and Martha (30) Henry and Eleanor Henry (1).
(I am confident that this is the right George Henry because a) age fits b) James Henry is George's uncle c) No alternative suitable George Henry to be found on the census. The 1841 census does not state relationships, but James only married Martha in 1838 and on marriage cert is stated to be a bachelor, so George is unlikely to be James's son unless he were illegitimate, but in that case why would George claim John Henry as his father on his second marriage cert. More likely, George was staying the night with his Uncle).

1851 census: George Henry (19), lodger, unmarried, Mason, born Lesbury. Living in Park Place, St Andrew, Newcastle with James Mayburn (31), Mason, born Toole?, Cumberland, James's wife Jane and their children Margaret and James.
(I have not yet found a family connection between George Henry and the Mayburn family, but am confident that this is the correct George Henry as age, place of birth and occupation all fit. Maybe George was sent to him to learn his trade?)

1855 on birth cert of daughter Eleanor, occupation is Mason Journeyman.

1861 census: George Henry, Head, 29, Mason, born Lesbury, Northumberland. Address: Boarding school yard, Berwick on Tweed Also in household: Eleanor Henry, wife, 33. Eleanor T. Henry, daughter, 5. James T, son, 4 months.

1863: Death of wife Eleanor (nee Taylor). (George is the informant, present at the death, address Castlegate, Berwick. Ellen (Eleanor) is described as wife of George Henry, Mason)

1868: Marriage to Ann Allan

1871 census: Head, 39, Mason, born Bamburgh. Address: Holy Island. Also in household: Ann Henry, Wife, 24, no occupation. James Henry, son, 10, scholar. Elizabeth Allen, Sister-in-law, 16, no occupation, born Holy Island. Ann Henry, daughter, 1.

1881 census: Head, 46, Mason, born Bamburgh. Address: Holy Island. Also in household: Ann Henry, wife, 35, no occupation. Ann Henry, daughter, 11, scholar. Martha Jane Henry, daughter, 8, scholar. Jemima Henry, daughter, 5, scholar. John Allan Henry, son, 2.

1891 census: Head, 56, Mason, born Bamburgh. Address: Prior Row, Holy Island. Also in household: Ann Henry, wife, 44, no occupation. Ann Henry, daughter, 21, servant. Jemima Henry, daughter, 15, no occupation. Margaret Henry, daughter 8, scholar. George Henry, son, 5, scholar. Thomas Allan Henry, son, 1.

1895: Death on Holy Island. Described as aged 63, Mason (journeyman). Infomant is Ann Henry, widow of deceased, present at the death. (Makes her mark)

Burial: 24 April 1895 at St Mary the Virgin, Holy Island (from NBI).
