Thanks to you all for your replies. Will look at your suggestions. Ron, it is the overall look of the tree I am disappointed with - I didn't realise you could do your own designing. MGH S has pm'd me to offer his help so I have replied that I would much appreciate it.

Thanks again

Ann

Ann, have you tried Tribal Pages (free site), its like having your own website. Gedcom your tree from here to Tribal Pages and thats it really, all your notes go with it. You can have a photos page, choose your colour home page, give it a password, invite people, have a guestbook, and write your own introduction. I love it.

My experience is that people unfamiliar with family trees prefer to look at narrative reports like 'Ancestors of [your mum]'. I use Family Historian, but other progs should have a similar facility.

Family Tree Maker is good tree making program and it allows you to add various events to the boxes and to customise the tree with various colours but the layout of the All in One leaves a lot to be desired and cannot be altered very much.

Is it the layout that you find uninspiring or the general look of the boxes and the information in them.

I assume that as a new user to the program you may not be aware of it's tree designing capabilities.

As regards the importing of dates etc. Family Tree Maker is very strict when it comes to importing data if that data is not in accordance with strict gedcom format then it will be ignored and left out altogether during import.

You can use the search and replace text facilty in Notepad to correct the gedcom, this avoids counting down all the lines till you get to that particular mumbered line

I know this is a constant topic - forgive me!

I have just exported my tree, apparently successfully - which amazes me. It has installed on FTM 2005 but I'm very disappointed with the way it looks. Have got so used to the Genes layout is there any way you can copy that to a disc? I was hoping to show my tree to my mother in a few months time but it just looks very uninspiring.

Was pleased to see that my tree is still on Genes as well as I thought it had shot off in to my in-box and I would then have to import it to get it back on Genes.

I know I sound a complete loser and i'm sorry.

Something else I had read on other threads was about dates being altered/changed. i know you have to put the dates as dd/mm/yyyy but what do you do if you only know the quarter a bmd was registered? It showed up as a list on notepad for all the dates ignored but only tells you which line they are on, which means trawling through the whole tree yet again.
