that is true

.......... but it does mean that GR cannot send an email to that new address say that there is a pm waiting, or send you Hot Matches ..... ro any of those things.

Emails from GR go to the email address that they have on file ........ and if it has not been changed, then it means that they go to an inactive box and bounce back to GR.

which means that those people would not respond to Tina, for example.

The fact that you change your email and don't tell GR doesn't stop you from countinuing to be an active member either, paid up or otherwise.

You can still continue to log on to the site and participate as any other member.

Thanks to all once more. I did not realise the submitted trees remained after a subscription lapsed. One lives and learns.

Also I only now realised there is an easy button to follow ones own threads - rather than trying to remember to check each one often.

Even I go on holiday sometimes so expect to wait a few days/weeks occaisonally.

people who joined years ago still have their names and trees on the site, unless they physically removed them

If you were a paying member, GR does not delete you from the site if you do not renew .......... you just now become a non-paying member

and it makes no difference with a non-paying member.

So your name and tree just stay on here

It allows them to say they have millions of members ......... and there is no record of what the active membership total actually is.

The real point is whether the member has kept GR updated with changes in email addresses

Members who joined years ago are still on the site, otherwise it would not be possible to send them a mesaage. They may choose not to visit it any more.

If the other person has opened the message then obviously they have read it. I usually wait about a month and then send a follow up. This often prompts a response.

If they haven't opened the message then there is not a lot you can do. If they are receiving prompts from GR then it might be worth a follow up, but there is no way of telling if they are or not.

It is not unkowm to get a reply after several months - I had one after a year.....!

Tina

the point of GR's management is that the site is here to share information .......... but not all people may believe that

But also remember that this site has been going for quite a number of years. There are many millions of "members" ....................... and many of the members who joined in the early days are probably no longer on the site.

So, you just have to hope that the people you want to contact are still keeping GR in their sights.

Look in your sent message, a purple envelope means the message has not been read

how can you check to see if your messages have been opened? I have sent lots of messages and am still waiting for people to reply.

Thank you all for responding, I thought the point of GR was to make links and share. It is sad that some can't just type "sorry can't help" or hit "not my relative". It only takes a moment and at least one would know not to keep hoping. Holidays can cause delay, even needing a few days to verify details but just a quick respons is so welcome.

Have you checked to see if your messages were opened? That will give you a clue as to whether they're still around GR.

Hi Tina

My experience is that only a handful of people respond. As Island says, there are all sorts of reasons why not. Some pop up years later. You could try searching GR trees for possible matches too.

Is it just me, or the people I've mailed, but I have had no replies from the last four people I've tried to make contact with?

Two were only possible links but one, especially, was a cast iron case of family match.

Have others had a problem? Has the transfer of mail been disrupted by the changes going on at Genes R?
