I would like to back up my tree with the social history of that time, being 1700's and 1800's as it would be interesting to understand their lives. My tree is mainly regarding Kent and my family tree consists of the Rigden and the Shilling families. I would appreciate recommendations, as I have to order from the net therefore not able to see the book before buying.
Kind regards Ana

Hi Anna

Dont want you to be envious, but hubby has just returned from a visit to his cousin JIm, aged 87 today, and brought home a whole pile of books about old Macclesfield, a minefield of information.

Try the history section of the local library.

Google Kent social history books. Or the name of the area in Kent your relatives come from

Thank you to you both for getting back to me. Yes Madmeg what a lovely gift. Unfortunately I can't visit the library as I live in Northern Spain and there are no english books about this area.

Kent is very varied.
We have farms, open country, large towns, docks, ports and seaside, ..to name just some.
Which areas are you interested in?
Perhaps we can help if you tell us a bit more about your family.

Sorry, I didn't realise that.

There are old books that you might find on "googlebooks" which are out of the copyright period and many are reproduced in full on there.

I suppose the area's I am looking into regarding my family tree, is the countryside especially farming and live in servants and needlewoman. These seem to be the main occupation of the Rigden tree I am researching.
