I think you need a date of marriage if it took place in recent years.

Same for birth cert. Correct me if Im wrong

Hi Michelle, usually if you have the number of the entry, month, year and place of marriage then I thought you could send to the General Register Office for a copy of the marriage certificate? Certainly for the older records this is all you need - who told you they need the date of the marriage?

Was the marriage in a Registry Office or a Church? If it was a Church you could perhaps contact the Minister or Priest and ask if he could look in the Church records. If it was a Registry Office they might search for you - possibly with a charge of a few pounds -

A long time ago - about 35 years - I was looking for my birth mother, whom I had been told might have died and also might have remarried. I contacted the Registry Office of the area that local gossip said she had gone to, and they sent me a copy of the marriage cert straight away. I think the charge then was about 50p. I did not even know if she was alive or dead at the time, so they had to search both records for a long period of time - i.e. 1945 - 1972. as I had no clue at all as to dates etc.

The marriage cert. gave me her new name - which of course will not be a problem to you as it is a man you are looking for and they do not change their names usually - it gave me her address as it was in 1957 which was the date she had remarried. I was then able to trace her further movements from that address to the one I eventually found her at.

Tracking people down takes a bit of detective work, but if you have a name you can usually find the person. As I said, it is easier to trace a man, than a lady, but sheer dogged persistence usually will work.

Good luck - and come back to me if you think of any other questions
