Thank you all very much for your help and also a thank you to the Family Tree Forum for their input, “Straw Plaiters” makes complete sense as its what they are employed at in the later census’s.

Ah, sorry Ive been away. The good folk on Family Tree Forum have sorted it as meaning "Plaiters". Brilliant :)

If you click on page 1 of the 1841 census return you will see some vertical writing on the left hand side of the page which I think says:
Pl means Plait trade all through

Well, its really confusing everyone. Over on FTF they feel it must be a localised trade - do we know what the local industry woman could do at home was? You know, how you get weavers in every house in certain areas.

Ive got to feed my menfolk now - but can someone have a look at later census - even the 1861 to see if its clearer on there what all these women are doing :)

Sorry Somerset, I cant believe it means that, there are some two or three in a family sometimes. Im sure its something to do with their status.

Ill ask someone ...........

You can't get it from the front page you have to go via the back door so to speak. Dont ask me why? its all to do with Ancestry's new page.

The bits for the front page are 439-18-19 but they dont work?

Ken

census reference/record is 439-4-18-19
