Hi there,
Just downloaded my two searches for the 1911 census and got both the right families the first time, brill. But what i would like to know is, does anyone know where Brickyard, Church Street, Elsecar was, as the little street no longer exists acording to google earth. Many thanks everyone.

hi there Jonesay,
thanks for that. I did live there and can remember the streets, but think that Brickyard has now gone, mum can't remember either lol she says sometimes things come to her and then the next day its gone. Must be somewhere along that street. Thanks for looking, I will try and contact the Centre.
thanks again

Church Street still exists, even if the brickyard doesn't.

Go to http://www.streetmap.co.uk/
and search for church street, then select the E;secar one to get to:
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=438454&y=400214&z=110&sv=church+street&st=6&tl=Map+of+Church+Street,+Elsecar,+Barnsley,+South+Yorkshire,+S_74&searchp=ids.srf&mapp=map.srf

Some key info is embedded in this URL (x=438454&y=400214).

Actually, I prefer the old site, which you get the option to use:
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newdefaulte2.htm
There, when you hover over a square on the map, my browser shows the associated URL containing the (x,y) coordinates for the centre of the square.

Next, go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/
and start your search, then enter the cordinates 438454 and 400214
(It's not really necessary to specify the location to the nearest metre, but you've got to enter some numbers, so why not.
In 1855, Church St shows up, unnamed, with the W half being a trail across the fields.
In 1893, it's an unnamed road for its whole length.
In 1905/1948, Church St is named.
These are all the 6" maps (1:10560).
There are also 3 25" maps (1892,1903,1930). Church St is named on all these, but these larger scale maps are not zoomable, so it's really hard to make stuff out.

On none of these older maps can I see any sign of a brickyard.
