thanks for all your advice, at the moment its just the 1901 i might get access to as a lot of the people i want to look for in the 1911 census are in wales which haven't been transcribed yet. i might wait until they fully transcribe the 1911 and then see whats around

I use Ancestry but if is just the 1901 then try :-

Do not discount Genes Reunited.£25 for six months if you upgrade next time you renew.

Personally I would go with Ancestry every time, and a subscription is the cheapest way to go (although at first it seems expensive you can use the site all day every day and do as many look-ups as you want).

The 1911 census is completely separate and is at www.1911census.co.uk

You have to buy credits for this and it costs about £1 for a transcription and over £3 for a census image which is pretty expensive, but it's either that or wait until 2012 when I think Ancestry and other websites will probably include it in some subscriptions.

Its a toss up really between Ancestry and Findmypast.

Even on FMP you have to pay separately for the 1911 census, and I imagine this will continue for some time.

Worth looking at what packages they each offer as they don't each have identical records. E.g. I am currently subscribed to Ancestry, but FMP has the National Burial Index. I may change my allegiance if the 1911 census is ever free.

If you are near to Kew the 1911 census can be viewed for free at the National Archives, you have to book on the day and get an hour's slot, but if computers are available you can book a subsequent hour. You only have to pay for the print outs at their standard rate.

Which package you go for depends on how much time you have to devote to the research. If you think you could "blitz" everything you need to find out in a few weeks then maybe just a month would be fine. I have annual so that I can dip in and out.

Kerin, I joined Ancestry at the start of the year and find it very good , for the census 1841 to 1901 and BMDs, and military Records (these for WW1 have given me insights into details of family members over and above the bare 'facts' )

The 1911 is not on Ancestry so I pay per view on that .

I have finally reached the stage after 7 years of ancestor hunting that I think I need to start to pay for access to census records. I have managed to survive with help from great family records keeping, help from friends and also look ups from people on GR for which I am eternally greatful on getting me out of some dead ends.
Do any of you have any tips on what the best sites are, whether to pay a monthly fee or pay as you view and also which are the best sites
I mainly want to look at the 1901 and 1911 census but will probably want to look at the others. I know you can get the 1881 free on the familysearch website but what sites are better.
Or is buying the census records on CDROM the best way to go
