Can anyone please tell me how to find info prior to 1837 without going to the specific area.

There are some records on the IGI (found on www.familysearch.org)

You can also order parish records for a lot of places on microfilm from your nearest LDS Family History Centre (addresses also on www.familysearch.org). These cost just a few pounds to order.

Don't be put off using the Family History Centres because of the religious aspect of the church.

The Family History Centres are run by volunteers and they are not allowed to discuss their religion with you unless you specifically ask them about it. All the volunteers that I have come across are very helpful and knowledgeable and will help you if you haven't used the machines before and will show you where to find what you are looking for.
