I found two of my great greats shown on a reproduction of a tithe map in a booklet produced by a local history society. It was a small hamlet in Surrey and the ownership and tenants of the cottages were shown. I think the original tithe maps are held in the local records offices.

What and when is it that you are trying to find?

By far the majority of people only rented their property from a private landlord. House ownership for the masses only started after WW2.

Council house rental increased during the 60's and 70's but has now dropped away into third place after ownership and private rental.

There was no central register until the Land Registry only came into being after the 1925 legislation but it was subject to much opposition. It was only in the early 1990's that it finaly became compulsory.

There must be a way to find out about house occupation in the past, is there any where that people post details free? Owners have a list on their deeds of all previous owners?
