Hello,
I have just let my membership run out from Ancestry. Some time ago I read that you can get Ancestry cheaper than the £100 plus they now charge. Does anyone know how to get it cheaper?
Thnks.

You could phone them up and haggle which I did last year and got a discount or go through I think it was quidcom and you get cash back. They were tough to haggle with though.

Good luck

Thanks Marcelle, will try the haggle bit.

Please note that even when you do renew you won't get pallotts, early baptisms and marriages on the new package, so you get less for your money anyway or you have to pay for an upgrade.

Hi Linda
my Ancestry membership became due on April 12th I rang them up a couple of weeks ago but no joy they would not lower the fees, I have a new credit card so put in the new details they have not renewed me but I can still access things.

cheers Annabel

I renewed my membership in ancestry on Tuesday.

Living in Canada, several of the options always mentioned to get cheaper subs are not available for me, and to be honest, I can't be bothered searching around

SO ........ I renewed and upgraded to Premium to be sure that I could still access all that I have become accustomed to

They quoted me one price, about £108 .... but the invoice after I had entered all cc information etc was for £93.39 ........ so I got about a £15 discount without asking!

Maybe not as good as some of you expect to get ....... but it's still bloomin' good value for money!

Sylvia I think your "discount" was because you'e abroad & don't have to pay 17.5% VAT on your bill.

The VAT rate has been dropped from 17.5% to 15% so why have all the prices gone up? Does this mean that Ancestry is actually profitting from the VAT cut which was supposed to help UK businesses and consumers?

Sylvia, I'm in Canada too and the discount we get is because we don't have to pay VAT.

Hi
I posted earlier - you can get 6 months free membership by buying family tree maker.

This is available throigh Tesco Clubcard for £15 in vouchers.

Obviously you need to collect the vouchers but I think this is quite cheap.

Yvonne

the problem with GR Gold is that GR does not carry any records themselves, nor do they do any transcriptions, and there are lots of records they don't carry.

What they do is to re-direct you to one of the other sites ................ and may actually charge you for looking at information that is free elsewhere!

I have been told that GR does not carry the 1881 census and that is because that is available for free elsewhere ...... on www.familysearch.org. for example. The snag there being that you cannot look at the actual image.

Ancestry offers the 1881 for free ....... and you can look at the image.

I feel that the extra charged for GR Gold is of less value than paying the sub for ancestry ....... which also gives you access to sooooooooo many more records.

Ah well ..... there was I thinking I'd got a discount, and it was just VAT!!

Sylvia.
The 1881 census on Ancestry doesnt show an image option.

It does for the other years but you need to pay to view

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 20 Apr 2009 20:48

it does for those of us who have subs!

BUT, I guess then that the image for the 1881 is not available free anywhere
