Missing Grandad

Not sure why I can't find my grandfather on the 1911 census.

Stanley William Charles Casbard was born in 1901 in Warborough which is on the Oxfordshire/Berkshire border, although by 1911 the family were living in Islington, London. I have got the transcript for the rest of the family (father William Alfred, mother Lilla Bertha and two children Leonard and Doris) but Stanley is missing.

Any ideas anyone? I've tried searching under a variety of names and wildcards but nothing. Probably missing something obvious but I don't know what at the moment......

Hi Island - yes, I have the birth cert, but why isn't he on the 1911 census as he would have been about 10 years old?

This may be him, mistranscribed as Ceesford, staying with Charles & Eliza Swell.

Eliza's name was STEED before marriage as was his mother Lilla's, so they may be relations?

HOUSEHOLD CEESFORD STANLEY M 1902 9 Wallingford Berkshire
HOUSEHOLD SWELL CHARLES OLIVER M 1873 38 Wallingford Berkshire
HOUSEHOLD SWELL ELIZA CHARLOTTE F 1858 53 Wallingford Berkshire

Looking back to the 1891 census Lilla's mother, Eliza, is the same age and has the same place of birth as Eliza Swell has on the 1901 census.....so it looks like he is staying with his grandmother and her second husband.

Thanks everyone for replying to this! ChristinaLancashire - Wow - you may have solved a riddle I've had for ages! I've often wondered what happened to Eliza Charlotte Steed (Lilla's mother) when her husband William Steed died early. Looks like she may have married again! Will have to check this out!

Thanks everyone very much - I knew it was worth putting this on the board!

Oh dear, that looked so good as well.....I still think that Stanley Ceesford is my Stanley Casbard, but the Eliza Charlotte Swell on the 1911 is not my Eliza Charlotte Steed. Having checked the 1901 census, there is an Eliza C Swell living as wife of Charles Oliver and there is another Eliza Steed living in London, which I know is my Eliza. However they both come from Lavenham and the birth dates are very similar.

I also cannot find a marriage between a Steed and a Swell. Never mind they obviously fit into the family somewhere!

Just been checking through some old photographs that I inherited when family members died and I have a photo of the Cricketers Public House in Warborough. There is a large group of people sitting outside, one of which I'm certain is my Grandad.

Have just looked at the publican's name on the front of the pub - guess what - the surname is Swell! Proof I think!

So ChristinaLancashire you have earnt a big internet hug!

I don't believe it! I only checked the marriages from 1901 onwards because I thought the Eliza Steed in London was mine, obviously not! Didn't therefore think of looking for anything as far back as 1896. Brilliant.

She was a game girl wasn't she? 53 to his 38! And he's got a pub! Perhaps I might do as well.......

Blossom.
Thats great having a photo with the name Swell over the pub.
No doubt in my mind Stanley is with her in 1911.
You should view the original census page and see what other information there is.

You might get the names of children who had died
