Please what is GEDCOM and how do I upload my tree to it to wherever?

Gedcom is just the name for the format that a family tree file is stored in, like word files or excel files. If you have your tree here on Genes and export it, you will re4ceive an email with an attachement, that attachment will be a gedcom file.

You need specific software to open gedcom files, any family tree software will do it although I beleive that you can download gedcom viewers as well.

Thank you very much Sam. My tree is on Genes and I was reading through the threads on Tips and just wondered if I'd be better off transfering it to somewhere else ready for when I want to print i]t off, quite a way off yet though.

It would be no use exporting it now unless you intend to use it now, as it is, every time you add to your file on GR you will need to export a new gedcom as the old one will not contain any new information or people you have added to your online database.

If you do not intend adding any significant amount of details or people to your online tree then it;'s a good idea to download the gedcom and keep it as a back up, bearing in mind what I said about adding more info or people
