Hi Barry

If your mum is still alive does she have any relatives within the Biddulph family that she could ask re her possible adoption details as if a child is adopted then usually other family members will know about it. Also have you considered the possibility of getting a copy of your mum's birth cert which might shed some light on her previous name. The GRO hold adoption certificates dating from 1927 to current date. Another avenue could be that you could search/enquire with her local Social Services as many adoptions, like now, were dealt with via Social Services, however depending on the religion of the birth mother it was more usual for a child to be placed with similar religious people and adoptions were arranged via that particular religious order.

Another avenue could be to check would be the phone directories/electoral rolls at the time of your mum's birth again a bit of a long shot but you never know

Good luck

If the birth that Linda found is the correct one then I don't think she was adopted, as there is usually a number written in the margin against a birth where the child has been adopted.

Could it be that if your mother was illegitimate (which appears to be the case from the birth registration) that this is the reason she doesn't like talking about her childhood. People of her age view illegitimacy differently to people of today.
